What is 1917 About?

Witness a first world war epic recorded in one continuous shot. Director Sam Mendes’s latest attempt features a fresh idea – one that thoroughly manages to hold the fancy. Yet the film owes much of its success to cinematographer Roger Deakins who pulls off the audacious trick of shooting the two-hour film in its entirety as though it were an unbroken shot. Set amidst the turmoil of World War I, two British soldiers Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) and Schofield (George MacKay) get handed a tricky mission – they need to warn a battalion of thousands about a possible trap laid out by the Germans. And so, they embark on a no man’s land, studded with eerie abandoned trenches, empty fields, and villages ravaged by war. This is a movie that was built for the big screen. A unique portrayal of bravery, treachery, and faith, that not only captures the essence of the interminable war itself, but also human misery that manifests in its wake.
