Legendary musicians and choreographers

Arvo Pärt was born in 1935 in Estonia. During his career, he has created many takes on Fratres, which includes the score for this performance; it features violin, strings and percussion. “Liturgy”, which is the title of the show, means “brothers”, and its spiritual ardour fluently forges the imagination of an ancient monastery in the minds of the audiences.

Christopher Wheeldon has always been inclined towards modern compositions, and this isn’t his first time using Pärt’s music in a production. He loves using classical music as a foundation upon which he can further develop contemporary pieces.

NYCB resident choreographer Justin Peck’s seventh ballet for the company, it is perfectly staged by nine performers. Prepared in 2014 for the Fall gala, this performance features eye-catching costumes created by London-based designer, Mary Katrantzou, now seen in 21st Century Choreographers III. Composer César Franck’s captivating solo “de piano Avec Accompagnement de Quintette à Cordes’ surrounds this ballet. This is his first time experiencing the addition of his music in the repertoire of the NYCB.

A compelling set of performances

Composer’s Holiday: Gianna Reisen, the youngest NYCB-commissioned choreographer, brings to the big stage a feeling of liveliness with her fresh new work for the company. Her choreography showcases agility and accompanies a violin/piano interpretation of Lukas Foss’ Three American Pieces. The name of the ballet is from the third part of his music. Two solo musicians perform it, while a team of twelve adept dancers make up the cast for this performance. While Mark Stanley is handling the lighting design, the dancers will show off Virgil Abloh’s majestic costumes.

Liturgy: This pas de deux is contemplative and has a euphonious and other-worldly touch that you will feel throughout the performance. Featured are two dancers who you will see separating before returning to each other’s arms, the entire duration of which is a continually increasing emotional tension. The performance ends with both of them blending into the darkness together.

Belles-Lettres: This is one of the most sensual pieces of work done by Justin Peck to date. It features a beautiful layering of intricate lace-lettered clothes with Franck’s mesmerising lyrical composition. Filled with dizzy pas de deux, you will hear them seamless crescendo into a heart-warming climax.

New Tanowitz: Pam Tanowitz is famous for her smart style and meticulous steps, and she has been critically acclaimed by The New Yorker. In this season’s programme, you will witness her second creation for the NYCB.
