A truly world-class act put together by renowned experts in the field, Amour is an intriguing dive into the world of post-war Paris. Michel Legrand’s original composition featured an exquisite French libretto by Didier Van Cauwelaert, which was later translated to English by Jeremy Sams. The show first premiered in Paris in 1997, proving to be a phenomenal hit amongst casual viewers and critics alike. In 2003 alone, after a brief run at Broadway, Amour was nominated for a whopping five different Tony Awards and nine Drama Desk Awards.
The premiere in London this year pays homage to the legendary composer who was instrumental in the success of the piece – Michel Legrand. He had hoped to watch his masterpiece unfold on the London stage but unfortunately passed away this year at the age of 86. Director Hannah Chisik and choreographer Matt Cole take the reins to bring you an amazing reenactment of the story that captured hearts at Paris and Broadway!
The Story
Dusoleil is a Parisian who leads a monotonous life working as a civil servant. Timid, modest, and stodgy on the outside, Dusoleil lives by himself and works long hours in a dull office. His fantasies are all he has left to add color to his life. He writes letters to his mother and dreams of a beautiful young woman named Isabelle locked up by her maniacal husband.
Unsuspectingly, Dusoleil realizes that he has been blessed with the power to pass through solid objects effortlessly. With his newfound superpower, the man turns into a modern Robin Hood, walking through walls to steal from the rich and give to the impoverished victims of the second world war.
