“Haieff Divertimento” is a blues pas de deux (French for “step of two”). It cleverly combines modern concert dancing with neoclassical ballet and popular American dance expressions. Composed in 1947, the last time this was performed was about twenty years ago. So, this fresh new take is a refreshing sight for your ballet-longing eyes. The Classic NYCB I show is a must-watch!

Jerome Robbins choreographed “Four Chamber Works”. It is a commemoration of the 1982 Stravinsky Centennial. He picked up the quintet of chamber works, either of them not having any connection with each other, and cleverly merges them into a ballet of four parts. The third part of the complete performance is “Concertino”, and it is a solo performance.

The New York City Ballet, ever since 1961, has been showcasing every section of Episodes separately and excludes the solo by Taylor. NYCB displays this ballet as a homage to the American choreographer Paul Taylor, who left the world in 2018. It includes his stand-alone piece which has never been seen since 1989.

The latest addition by Justin Peck

Premiered in 2015, “Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes” is a ballet by Justin Peck, which highlights a score that he had segregated into four distinct choreographic performances. The first movement is filled with energy and Peck calls it “energy-like”. The second movement has been choreographed to express the weather pattern cycle. Flight of a bird-pair is represented in the third movement, and the last movement puts forth a dazzling and powerful choreography that provides the audiences with a feeling of life and competition. Still wondering if the Classic NYCB I is for you or not?

Each movement has an essential element that completes the glory

Haieff Divertimento follows Alexei Haieff’s composition, which is just as vivacious as it is powerful. This recherché ballet feels even more impressive when offered in the style of Balanchine. It features one leading couple along with a quartet of supporting couples, with all of them dressed in not-so-detailed yet graceful costumes.

Jerome Robbins’ pas de trois, Concertino, is another part of this sundry ballet arrangement. It is made perfect by the beautiful and suspenseful score by Igor Stravinsky. The intricate and stimulating musical piece climbs up to passionate crescendos and smashes down into deep silence while building up and releasing tension throughout the performance. Enriching the show are three dancers whose chemistry makes them an excellent addition.

Episodes is Balanchine’s masterpiece; a four-part ballet created from his love for Anton von Webern’s orchestral music. Balanchine’s way of paying tribute to the timeless composer was to set this beautiful ballet to Ricercata, which is the last segment of Webern’s orchestration of a composition by Bach.

Agnes de Mille’s Rodeo follows afterwards, which is a Justin Peck choreography. The lead dancer is a woman, who teams up with fifteen passionate and playful male dancers, creating a refreshingly warm show that will tug your heart.
