Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan, also known as Cloud Gate, has created a worldwide reputation. They are well-known to an international fan circle and all the reputed critics because of their vast touring. Lin Hwai-Min established the company in 1973. Its name derives from the earliest known Chinese form – Cloud Gate. The company became the first contemporary group of dancers in the greater Chinese community.

Every single dancer is profoundly trained in internal martial arts, ballet, modern dance forms, as well as meditation and Qi Gong. Under Hwai-Min’s leadership, they take ancient aesthetics and convert it into an observation of contemporary movement. Due to their innovative and one-of-a-kind choreography techniques, they can celebrate the conventional while staying new and fresh.

A little about 13 Tongues and Dust

The show is made up of two parts – 13 Tongues and Dust. 13 Tongues is set in the oldest district of Taipei, Bangka. It is the work of the company’s new artistic director Cheng Tsung-Lung. He grew up selling slippers by the road. He uses these memories by combining them with the sounds, sights and energy of the district.

Dust is the product of choreographer and founder Lin Hwai-Min. It focuses on the battle of Dresden, and especially, Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich’s response to the city’s destruction. This is his requiem for this century, and in it, you shall see the performers struggling through the darkness as dirt and smoke covers the city in a twisted manner.

An idea about what you are going to experience

13 Tongues and Dust is a brilliant display of various movement disciplines which includes different forms of mental and physical factors, like meditation, martial arts and dancing. The show is entirely vivid in itself, and the addition of lighting and sound design to the impressive choreography guarantees a performance that is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the audiences to grab. The fusion of contemporary music and the native Taiwanese culture, along with revolutionary digital elements, creates a jaw-dropping and thoroughly urban piece. Experience a fantastic convergence of art, dance and music as the internationally renowned Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan offer you an astounding performance in four parts.
