Cosi fan Tutte tickets are out now!

Così fan Tutte by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is an Italian opera buffa. It premiered on 26th January 1790 in Austria’s Burgtheater in Vienna. Lorenzo Da Ponte, librettist for “Don Giovanni” and “Le Nozze di Figaro”, wrote the libretto for this play. Così fan Tutte is called initially “Così fan Tutte, ossia La Scuola Degli Amanti”. Its short title stands for “So do they all”, with “Tutte” meaning women. When translated into English, you get “Women are like that”. After its first performance, the opera got only five runs before being stopped by the demise of Emperor Joseph II. In May 1811, it made the first British performance in London’s King’s Theatre. It made its US debut in 1922 at the Metropolitan Opera. Now, the play is at Lincoln Center in New York, and all you need are Cosi fan Tutte tickets to catch this run.

A wonderful adaptation by McDermott

Though the opera was initially set in Italy in the 18th century, director Phil McDermott adapted the story for 1950s’ America. With his production, he cleverly arranges the background of America in the 50s. He beautifully represents the colourful ambience of Coney Island. He layers quite a few little pieces in the arias and overtures, which creates an enjoyable performance. Although it is often regarded as a comic opera, the music composed by Mozart offers more profound meaning, and it is brilliantly showcased by a talented cast. With Cosi fan Tutte tickets, you will watch a show that has an in-depth meaning to love and human nature.

A story of love and loyalty

A funny slapstick, Così fan Tutte surrounds a bet made among 3 men – Don Alfonso, Guglielmo and Ferrando. Guglielmo and Ferrando are officers on holiday in the US. Accompanying them are their finances, sisters Fiordiligi and Dorabella. When the men visit a nightclub, Don Alfonso, their mutual friend declares that a lady cannot be loyal to only one man. When the officers disagree, Alfonso places a bet that their women are the same as others, and he will prove their disloyalty to them.

The next day, Alfonso tells the sisters that their husbands have been called for war. The two men bid goodbye to their fiancees. He gets the girls’ maid, Despina, to encourage the ladies to enjoy their freedom and find new lovers. Soon, Alfonso introduces them to his friends, who are but Guglielmo and Ferrando in disguise as Albanians, and they try to seduce the women. A series of comical efforts ensue with bizarre tricks. Still, Alfonso and Despina manage to deceive the quartet, and they put the couples in positions where they must make a decision.

The entire thing about the war is simply a hoax to test the sisters’ loyalty to their lovers. But, will Alfonso prove his statement to be true? What happens if he does? It is indeed too intense to be a comedy. Get the Cosi fan Tutte tickets and prepare to ask yourself if human nature is but the same as Alfonso described.
