Don Giovanni

Why Watch Don Giovanni

One of the greatest minds working in Opera today, Ivo van Howe brings a new Shakesperian twist to the classic tale of the seducer extraordinaire that has haunted Europe since its debut in the 18th century. The stage to him is a place of many contradictions, and he wishes for the audience to question their assumptions and the things they have so far taken for granted. Now he tackles the tale of the sinful and debased lecher, revealing hidden sides and perspectives you may never have seen before.

The Show

Don Giovanni was Mozart’s greatest and darkest opera. Written in the period of emotional turmoil following his father’s death, this opera delves into the life of Don Giovanni, who is an arrogant, brash and sexually promiscuous nobleman. He seduces his way across Europe, chasing women in a predatory way, and abusing or killing anyone that gets in his way. All through his delve into the world of debauchery and deceit, he never expresses any regret or remorse over the terrible things he does or says. However, on a particularly ominous day, Don Giovanni comes across the statue of an old commander, a former victim of Don’s insatiable urges, and the dead man’s statue comes to life, accusing him of wilfully escaping the consequences of his actions, and offering Giovanni a chance to repent for his crimes. Don refuses, and the ethereal Commendatore drags him down to hell, where he will pay for his actions for the rest of eternity. Dark and gripping, this opera has continued to thrill and spook audiences since 1788!
