Watch the Frankenstein off-Broadway musical

Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel ‘Frankenstein’ left a remarkable impact on future generations. It is 2020; more than two centuries have passed since the book was first published and you are up for yet another modern representation of a story you will never forget. The Frankenstein off-Broadway musical is a romantic story, highlighting people’s need for love and affection. The two-act musical deals with the same story as written by Shelley but has the modern touch of a musical theatre. A timeless classic, Frankenstein will immerse you in a few hours of terror which is lightened with the inclusion of romance.

The creative team

This isn’t the first time for Frankenstein’s sad story to hit the theatres in New York. In 2007, an off-Broadway production premiered at the 37 Arts Theatre. Then, there were a few international productions for Germany, Melbourne, and London before the show returned to New York with a new team ten years later.

The Frankenstein off-Broadway musical is directed by Clint Hromsco and follows the book and lyrics of the famous composer, Eric B. Sirota. Sirota being a PhD in Physics knows exactly how to blow life into this mind-boggling story. The production sticks to the original tale and is neither a comedy nor a parody. Austin Nuckols’ music direction is on point and easily blends with the eerie mood of the show. The creature is played by Erick Sanchez-Canahuate, who received critical acclamation for his performance. The costume design by Jennifer Cornelis fits in perfectly with Maarten Cornelis’ lighting design. With graphics by Amy Londyn and set design by Matthew Imhoff, you don’t have a choice but to connect with the show.

The story

The musical may comprise the same setting and characters, but the production focusses on the love between the characters occupying the story.

At a very young age, Victor Frankenstein lost his beloved mother. After her premature death, Victor stands against mortality and he starts working on an experiment to create an immortal being. As his series of tests turn out to be successful, they also make him overconfident. He collects organs from dead bodies, putting them together and tries to reanimate the corpse he has assembled. Little did he know that he was stepping inside a territory he wasn’t ready to handle. While he manages to give life to a humanoid creature, it turns out to be a grotesque creation.

Victor and his creation are not the only lead characters in the Frankenstein off-Broadway musical. Supporting the doctor is his partner, Elizabeth, whom he loves dearly. When Victor fails to give his creature the same love, jealousy burns bright and his very own masterpiece goes out of control.

This musical is just right for people who love horror with a punchy story behind it. The music is well-matched and nothing could complement the show any better. If you have ever been fascinated by the life of Frankenstein or love classic stories, you must get your tickets before they sell out.
