Why Watch Il Barbiere Di Siviglia

In its newest concept for Paris Opera by Italian director Damiano Michieletto, Rossini’s famous opera is transported to quirky, modern-day Seville. With a perfect blend of side-splitting humour and a delicious take on music, Michieletto’s vivid production alternates smoothly between picturesque realism and dreamlike fantasy. It is impossible to escape the show’s rhythmic power, spiralling crescendos, absurd ensembles, and highlights such as Figaro’s tongue-twister aria, Largo al factotum! A triumphant tale of bribery, deception, and disguise, the opera is the story of a determined lover who will stop at no cost to win the hand of his love, with clever help from the barber Figaro who is never lacking in ideas and costume.

The Story

The story is set in Seville in the 18th century where Count Almaviva has fallen madly in love with the beautiful Rosina. The only issue is that it’s going to take several attempts and a whole lot of planning and plotting for him to finally win her hand. Rosina’s guardian, Dr Bartolo, has an eye on her dowry, and both the doctor and the schemer Don Basilio try to thwart the love of the young couple. Determined to court Rosina, the Count seeks help from the clever barber, Figaro, in an attempt to try and outsmart Dr Bartolo and sweep Rosina off her feet.

A grand plan is hatched, full of mischievous escapades and inventive antics. Complete with a famed overture and radical twists and turns, Gioachino Rossini’s classic opera is a masterpiece of comedy.
