Tony Award-winning playwright and director Michael Mayer produces La Traviata (English translation – The Fallen Woman). It is a three-act opera in which love is explored while taking an in-depth look at the wilting of life and the always-present social stigma. When the opera opened in Venice in 1853 as “Violetta”, it didn’t do too good but quickly rose to become one of Verdi’s most famous works. The idea of this play is central to the expressive phrasing and extensive vocals of the opera. Watch the La Traviata MET Opera and feel the storytelling prowess of the Italian composer, which will give you tears and tell you much about true love.

A breathtaking performance

The magnificence of the set design and the attention to intricate details grabbed both the audiences and the critics’ attention during the show’s premiere in last season’s MET Opera. The sopranos Lisette Oropesa and Aleksandra Kurzak put up a captivating performance. It is further enhanced by tenors Vittorio Grigolo and Dmytro Popov. Verdi’s compelling story is vividly brought to life in this production. The immensely intriguing La Traviata MET Opera is one you must watch. It will tug at your heart and keep you seated throughout.

All for love

Act I

Violetta Valery is suffering from a sickness that has ensured her demise. She realised that there isn’t much time until she meets her fate, but being a courtesan, she has never known what true love feels like. Valery is not the typical 19th-century courtesan but a pleasant, knowledgeable and smart woman; something scarce during that period. Upon meeting Alfredo Germont at a party, she finds his honest manners and down-to-earth approach towards life to be charming and grows affection for him. She gifts him a single camellia flower and asks him to meet her when it has withered away. Alfredo becomes delighted because it was an invitation to cross paths again, and soon.

Act II

Both of them start living a peaceful country life far from the hustle and bustle of the cities. However, Alfredo discovers that their lavish life is the result of Violetta selling all her property. To find an honest living and to provide for themselves, he travels to Paris, promising her that he will return. When he is gone, Alfredo’s father, Giorgio Germont, comes to meet Violetta. He scolds her for luring his son into a disgraceful relationship with a prostitute. However, he soon understands that she never wanted his son’s money. This calms him down, but he tells her that she shouldn’t be with Alfredo even if her love for him is unconditional. She gives in to Giorgio’s demands and resumes her profession as a courtesan in the city.

Things take a drastic turn here on, as you witness a heartbreaking series of events that are beautifully expressed and shown in the La Traviata MET Opera. A story of true love and choices, this show will give you the memories of a lifetime.
