Before Le Nozze Di Figaro came to New York, it had its own story

Le Nozze Di Figaro or The Marriage of Figaro is a four-act opera buffa (comic opera), composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1786. It comprises an Italian libretto put together by the Italian-American librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte. On 1st May 1786, it premiered in Vienna’s Burgtheater. The opera’s libretto is inspired by Pierre Beaumarchais’ stage comedy La Folle journée, ou le Mariage de Figaro (The Mad Day, or The Marriage of Figaro) which was performed in 1784 for the first time. The opera was controversial back then due to its approach towards the 18th-century society. Now, watch Le Nozze Di Figaro in New York as it comes to Lincoln Center to amaze you.

A play enriched by an appropriate cast

Sir Richard Eyre’s production involves a highly-talented cast with Anita Hartig and Nadine Sierra playing the main characters. Anita Hartig is a Romanian operatic soprano. She was immensely triumphant with her role of Mimi in “La bohème” by Puccini. She had created a brilliant international career because of her prowess in acting. Hartig is capable of handling the most complicated aspects of the characters she plays using her facial expressions, gestures and tonal mastery. Nadine Sierra, on the other hand, is famous for playing the role of Lucia in Donizetti’s “Lucia di Lammermoor”, and Gilda in “Rigoletto” by Verdi. She is an operatic soprano from the US. Her rich musicality, mesmerising voice quality and effortless vocal technique have been praised by critics. They, along with the other characters, pull out the entire show with great exuberance, making Le Nozze Di Figaro in New York an enjoyable watch.

Can Figaro and Susanna count Almaviva’s plans?

The story deals with Figaro and Susanna. They are both servants and want to become official life partners but Count Almaviva, their employer, is giving his all to seduce Susanna. Four intriguing acts form the play. It is set in the estate of Almaviva, which is situated three leagues outside the Spanish city, Seville. Being a sequel to The Barber of Seville, plenty of characters from the original story can be seen in this play.

The Count was once a young romantic man who turned into a cunning womaniser. He hardly cared about Rosina, his wife. Figaro is in love with the maid Susanna, and they plan to marry soon. However, the sly Count has his plans set. He waits for the perfect opportunity to seduce her right before her wedding.

Almaviva needs to be taught a lesson for his misdeeds, so Susanna, Figaro and the Countess team up to take things in their own hands. Chaos ensues but in a seamlessly hilarious manner. The Count is unaware that he is about to learn a lesson about marital manners in the most unpleasant way, and it may just teach him about focussing on his wife.
