The music for Little Shop of Horrors is in the hands of Alan Menken, a multiple times Academy Award winner. To bring this production to the stage near you, he is working with celebrated lyricist and playwright, Howard Ashman. Menken’s style of music is a little inclined towards the 60s, including rock and roll elements as well as early Motown, which made the musical become a massive success upon its release in 1982. The elements of dark humour seamlessly fit into its narrative and make it immensely funny. Blood-sucking plant, love, and courage?

Meet Seymour Krelborn, a faint-hearted and depressed assistant working at a floral shop in New York’s Skid Row. He is an orphan who is usually working with Audrey, a young, beautiful girl with a flashy fashion sense. As you may have already guessed, Seymour likes her but he does not have the courage and confidence to approach her and tell her how he feels.

One of those days, he comes across a weird looking plant which is pretty similar to a Venus Flytrap; he calls it “Audrey II”. It looks to him like it is having trouble in the shop’s atmosphere. Seymour accidentally pricks his finger on the plant’s thorn and bleeds, sensing which the pod opens and starts sucking his blood. It becomes an attraction soon and business at the shop flourishes.

Seymour discovers that Audrey II is capable of talking. It promises to make all his dreams come true if it is given its necessary blood supply. With its requirements fulfilled, the plant keeps growing with time and also becomes capable of singing. Finally, Seymour realises that Audrey II may be an alien that is planning to take over the earth. But, what will he do? It has promised to fulfil all his wishes. Will the shy Seymour become a better version of himself to save the world?
