In 2018, the Louvre welcomed 10.2 million visitors and became the most-visited art museum in the world. It launched on 10th August 1793, displaying a collection of 537 artworks. Most of the paintings were regal and the seized property of the church. In 1796, the building closed due to structural issues and later reopened in 1801. Napoleon Bonaparte had the collection extended and renamed the museum to Musée Napoléon. However, after his retirement, the museum returned many seized items to their original keepers.

During the times of Charles, Louis XVIII and the Second French Empire, the Louvre acquired 20,000 pieces. The Museum’s possessions steadily grew ever since. Centuries of history under one roof

The exact location of the Museum is the Louvre Palace, which was initially established between the 12th and 13th century as the Louvre Castle under the reign of Philip II. You can take a peek at the preserved fortress’ remnants in the Museum’s basement. Urban expansion, in the later years, snatched away its defensive functions, and Francis I transformed it into the French Kings’ primary dwelling in 1546. Later, there were many events until the French Revolution when the National Assembly dictated that the Louvre be converted into a museum to highlight the country’s invaluable masterpieces.
