While the Louvre Museum and the National Museum of Modern Art accommodate artworks dating from the Middle Ages to the present day, the Orsay and the Orangerie takes care of the forgotten yet vital periods in the history of art that had an immense influence on the world – Impressionist and Post Impressionist eras. Buy the Orangerie and Musee d’Orsay Tickets combo to visit and explore the two museums.

See Monet’s famous Water Lilies in Musee de l’Orangerie

This is an art gallery that highlights masterpieces from the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist periods. The Musee de l’Orangerie stands beside the Place de la Concorde at the west end of Tuileries Gardens. Originally a greenhouse, the Orangerie offers a peaceful environment to visitors who want to familiarise with historic artists like Renoir, Monet, Modigliani and Cezanne. Located diagonally opposite the Orsay, this Museum is home to the eight Water Lilies murals made by the famous Claude Monet. The murals are on display in twin oval-shape rooms and provide a feeling of contemplation.

During the Liberation of Paris in 1944, the paintings were damaged. However, restoration work took place for the benefit of viewers. The paintings were Monet’s gift to France. In a letter he wrote to the then Prime Minister post-WWII, he stated that although not much, it was the only way he could be a part in the country’s victory. In the subterranean section, you will come across the Jean Walter and Paul Guillaume collection. It is a permanent exhibition that features works by renowned artists such as Picasso and Matisse. Once done exploring, head to the next attraction with your Musee d’Orsay Tickets.
