Why watch Stravinsky and Balanchine?

Throughout the long and noteworthy term of Balanchine with the NYC Ballet, he has not only been characterised by his distinct approach towards choreography but also his lifelong rapport with Stravinsky. This extensive show commemorates their friendship. From the powerful Danses Concertantes to the legendary Violin Concerto, you will drown all your senses in the choreographed art and style of Stravinsky and Balanchine.

Stravinsky and Balanchine

Igor Stravinsky is known as one of the 20th century’s most influential composers. He was popular for the ability to evolve with time and also his technical variations in rhythm and harmony. Stravinksy experimented with his approach and successfully gave birth to remarkable pieces of work in three style periods of music – the serial, the neoclassical and the Russian period. This made him one of the most flexible composers to ever exist.

George Balanchine is considered as one of the most famous artists of the 20th century. He became known as the Father of American Ballet due to the impact he made on this dance form in the United States. He was renowned for his variations in ballet and his signature neoclassical ballet style which he successfully spread all over the country. Stravinsky and Balanchine have worked together for long, and within 50 years, created more than 30 pieces of work.

According to Balanchine, Stravinksy’s music was meant to be turned into dances and physical movements. The duo has always followed the same idea about beauty and grace, which led them to easily mould different works that would seamlessly sail from one movement to the other. Usually, Monumentum pro-Gesualdo and Movements for Piano and Orchestra are offered as a pair and, together, they serve as the best way to incorporate the classical and newer versions of Balanchine’s ballet in one place along with suitable music.

Your experience

The show is comprised of four mesmerising ballet performances. The first one is called Danses Concertrantes and is a series of dances by a trio (pas de trois). The dances are just as innovative as they are energising. This ballet is a great representation of Balanchine’s speciality and his genius of making it blend in perfectly with the background score.

Monumentum pro-Gesualdo is the name of the second ballet. You will see the dancers wearing leotards and putting up a smooth, elegant performance which will surely leave you speechless. The choreography is simple yet utterly gorgeous, making it a delight for the watchers.

The third ballet is known as Movements for Piano and Orchestra and is stuffed with tension and drama. Every movement has been choreographed to cut like a knife and each step of the dancers is like adrenaline rushing through the veins.

Stravinksy Violin Concerto, the final performance in the Stravinsky and Balanchine show, is a ballet masterpiece. The last act consists of two duets, which are known as some of Balanchine’s finest works. These dances are based on uniformity and are guaranteed to astound you.
