What Is The Shawshank Redemption About?

Set in 1940s America, The Shawshank Redemption is a moving portrayal of an ongoing quest for redemption and freedom. Its enigmatic protagonist Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is wrongly imprisoned for a crime for which he is innocent. Inside Shawshank Prison, he befriends fellow inmate Ellis Boyd ‘Red’ Redding. Played by Morgan Freeman, ‘Red’ is also the film’s narrator. Based on the Stephen King novel ‘Different Seasons,’ the film explores the inmates’ relationships, brutality behind bars, and the concept of human institutionalization. Though the story takes place within the confines of prison walls, it somehow opens doorways to the current predicament in our society. It asserts the belief that freedom is a fundamental human right and emphasizes humanity’s potential for hope despite all odds.
