The Special Relationship comes to London’s Soho Theatre

Hassan Abdulrazzak brilliantly presents real-life stories of people who caught in the immigration between the UK and the US. Witness the tales of the individuals by visiting the Soho Theatre from 26th February 2020 to 21st March 2020. The show depicts the stories of British nationals living in America, finding themselves, finding them caught in international relations.

In the US, a foreign national will be deported even after serving their time in prison. Some crimes are quite small, while some are small. In The Special Relationship theatre production, the stories of punishment, separation from families, and forcefully leaving homes are clearly represented. Abdulrazzak conducted interviews of individuals who are masters in immigration law and criminal, which helped him in learning what happens behind the curtain of detention, immigration and deportation.

Cast and creatives

Hassan Abdulrazzak, an Iraqi playwright, portrays the situation of foreign nationals through his latest work The Special Relationship. His other works include ‘And Here I am’, ‘Dhow Under the Sun’ and ‘Baghdad Wedding,’ and are put on worldwide. Directed by the Butler Trust Award-winning artistic director of the Synergy Theatre Project, Esther Baker, The Special Relationship theatre is at Soho for an extremely limited run. Katy McPhee is the set designer while sound and lighting design is by Sarah Weltman and Tony Simpson, respectively.

More about the plot of the play

For immigrants, a small mistake can cost them hugely. From carrying a small grain of cocaine and a single digit on a breathalyzer to a forged cheque and a DEA sting, these crimes can lead to prison or worse, can cause deportation. Surprisingly, in the US, foreign nationals may face deportation even after serving their sentences. Based on real-life stories, The Special Relationship theatre production shows the punishment people face, the pain of separation from their family, and the struggle that follows.

With brilliant writing, meticulous research and interviews, Hassan brings forth dozens of individuals in front along with the truth and secrets that lie behind the veils detention and deportation. After watching the amazing performance of the cast, you question the society you live in and steps you can take to change them.

The term ‘special relationship’ often describes the diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom and the United States. This term came into widespread usage after Winston Churchill’s speech in 1946. Though both Governments have a close relationship, Hassan tries to show what prisoners go through once they commit a crime. Their lives changes, so do their families’. Even after living in a foreign nation for many years, they get deported from the land, leaving their loved ones behind.
