West Side Story
Every musical enthusiast knows West Side Story. Those who have yet to witness this epic production can now catch it at the Broadway Theatre in New York. Created back in 1957, West Side Story Broadway is the culmination of the hard work of four theatre legends, who wrote the book, directed, composed and penned the lyrics for the original production more than half a century ago.
The plot
Adapted from Shakespeare’s masterpiece, Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story tells the tale of two rival street gangs belonging to the Upper West Side of New York. One gang comprises primarily of Puerto Ricans and are known as the Sharks, while the other group, known as Jets, consists of white-Polish members.
Tony is a former member of the Jets clan and the closest friend to the gang’s leader, Riff. Maria is the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks. Tony falls in love with Maria, even though they both know that their love is strictly prohibited. Will the two lovers defy expectations and secure their lives together? Or is trouble waiting for them, leading them to an unhappy end? To know more, ensure you catch the show at the Broadway Theatre in 2020.
The history behind the successful musical
Arthur Laurents penned the original story, while Leonard Bernstein composed the heart-rending music for the production. Lyricist Stephen Sondheim and director Jerome Robbins played an integral role in the success of the original production back in the day. It ran for a record-breaking 732 continuous performances on Broadway before touring the country and the globe. In 1961, the West Side Story Broadway musical was adapted into a movie that went on to win an Oscar.
Now, West Side Story is returning to Broadway with a cast and crew of fresh and experienced faces. Ivo Van Hove has taken up the mantle as director, while Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker will choreograph the entire performance.
