Highlights

  • Witness a superb collection of three ballets assembled by master choreographer George Balanchine.

All Balanchine is all things ‘Balanchine’

George Balanchine is famous for his ballet and was considered to be a leading ballet choreographer in the 20th century. When he immigrated to the US, people didn’t watch or performed ballet. However, Balanchine co-founded the New York City Ballet and spent more than 35 years as its Artistic Director.

He received training at the Imperial Ballet School in Russia. What primarily put him on the top was his way of fusing Hollywood and Broadway with the classical Russian style and nurturing the spectacular neoclassical ballet style. You can get a glimpse of his way of performing ballet in this Broadway ballet. Grab All Balanchine tickets this season for a unique experience.

Balanchine has been a big influence

Balanchine has worked with many 19th and 20th-century composers, the likes of whom include Igor Stravinsky, Leo Delibes and Tchaikovsky. He was renowned for being able to skillfully combine music and dance into a single piece. Ballet enthusiasts may be aware of the Balanchine method. It was he who brought this technique under the limelight and it continues as a training process even today at the School of American Ballet.

Balanchine with his 400 choreographed works, New York City Ballet, and the School of American Ballet, gave birth to neoclassical ballet. You can recognise his influence when you notice dancers showing fierce attack and speed in the All Balanchine show.

What you will experience

The show is made up of three ballets by George Balanchine. These different pieces explore the influences and styles of the master choreographer.

Allegro Brilliante is the name of the first ballet you will witness. It is filled with a feeling of happiness and beautiful dance. This piece is established on the engrossing Piano Concerto No.3 by Tchaikovsky. Even though the choreography is set within a limited space and time, the movements are all magnificent works of art. Allegro Brilliante was originally meant to be a quickly choreographed filler, but it became well-known as one of Balanchine’s most respected works for its high speed and energetic style.

Have you watched Sylvia and Naila? These are two of Leo Delibes’ ballets which used the same classical French score All Balanchine’s second piece, La Source, consists of. La Source is a 27-minute-long ballet with 11 dancers showing their intricate body movements. Take in the technical acuity of the NYC Ballet during the 27 minutes as you see detailed and delicate footwork of the performers.

The third ballet is the final one and is not only choreographed by Balanchine but also Stravinsky. It has a riveting and mysterious score that will hold you down to your seats while you feel your body moving on its own. The story represented here involves tidbits from Russian folklore, which shapes a compelling tale. Being the final act, the last moments feel splendid. They uphold the original style of Balanchine and you will want more hereon.

Fans of George Balanchine and lovers of ballet will especially find this show as a fine treat for their tastes.
