A Long-running Musical for a Classic Band
British playwright Catherine Johnson wrote the jukebox musical. She based it on ABBA’s famous songs, which were composed by Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Anderson, the group’s former members. In fact, the title “Mamma Mia” is derived from their 1975 chartbuster song of the same name. Also, both Bjorn and Benny were part of the musical’s development since the start. Anni Frid Lyngstad, the lead singer of the band has been financially involved in the production. Until 2020, the musical is the 7th longest-running West End musical. On Broadway, the show ran for 14 years, finally closing in 2015 and becoming the 9th longest-running show in its history. Its fame extends as far as a 2008 film adaptation, which starred Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Amanda Seyfried and several other popular stars. The stage musical includes other hit songs like SOS, Voulez-Vous, The Winner Takes It All, Money, Money, Money, Take A Chance On Me, Dancing Queen, and Lay All Your Love On Me.
