Jack McNamara’s iconic The Spirit Part 3 is now playing in Battersea Arts Centre

Jack McNamara is quite a familiar name in the world of theatre. From ‘Darkness Darkness’ to ‘Sisyphus’ to ‘The Fishermen’, the names of his successful ventures are endless. He has now teamed up with Thibault Delferiere to come up with the amazing trilogy of The Spirit. This play, beautiful in its individual parts, has summed up all three of its pieces to create a masterpiece. Though a part of the same play, each one will be drastically different from the other two. The credit for making it different and individualistic goes solely to Delferiere, whose brilliance on stage is nothing short of watching a magician perform his tricks with ease and confidence. The production compels the audience to forget their surroundings and submit subconsciously to the actor’s magnanimous performance.

Issues explored in the play

Delferiere’s work of art is spontaneous enough to oscillate from one emotion to another in a fraction of second. The Artistic Director of the Battersea Arts Centre has gone on to say that The Spirit Part 3 could be his most incredible performance till date. The 3rd part, named ‘The Child’, deals with the final stage of freedom. After Delferiere finally frees himself from the shackles of freedom, he jumps around in joy and is almost intoxicated with happiness. He is in a room containing the remnants from his childhood. In this final part, he is at his wildest as he is stripped off from his inhibitions. The last part is even more enriched by the performance of Sharon Gal, a renowned electronic vocal artist.

The play is the brainchild of Delferiere. He was the one to share his thoughts to McNamara about the birth of an artist takes place and how his striving goes on until he reaches his desired freedom. But this journey is not only limited to the life of an artist but can also be linked with any normal being. As Delferiere portrays on stage, his work is about the struggles of being human irrespective of his artist soul. The audience understands by the end of the trilogy that freedom always comes at a price. With his exemplary performance, he has shown nothing to reassure the crowd and had only made them enter the complex region of the issues. Delferiere has done so with utmost honesty and imagination. 

Facilities available at the Battersea Arts Centre

The Spirit Part 3 contains some nudity, and is unsuitable for audiences below the age of 16. There is accessibility to the wheelchair for the disabled, a cloakroom, as well as a theatre bar.
